Ka Ai a Ka U'i

Ua olelo ia o ka haumana i ka olohe ana, pehea e hoopaa ai i ka ai a ka lua? I mai ka olohe iaia nei, ake aku ka manao e ike maka i ka paio o ka lani. Helelei ka hunehune mai, mehe ua ke ano!

When the seeker asked, "How do we master the strokes of our profession?" the Olohe spoke: “The eyes of the mind perceive the battle within the clouds; from the mist, the minute fragments emerge like falling rain.”

To internalize the strokes—a discipline meant to expand the boundaries of the soul—one must witness the infinitesimal details of the conflict. To practice the strike is to summon the adversary; they must appear before you in the full fury of their assault. Only then can the mind truly react to their energy, guiding the body to adjust, the feet to find their station, and the limbs to execute the block and strike that complete the ai.

One must never strike at empty space. To practice without a focused thought is to move without spirit. Instead, weave the breath and the balance into a singular flow—a balance of the self in harmony with the opponent. The entire vista of the battle must be seen in one clarified instant.

Before the first step is taken, the maka—the sacred target—must be established. At the onset of the attack, your focus is broad, but at the moment of impact, the world narrows. The parry, the block, and the strike must converge upon a point no wider than the head of a pin.

In this moment, let the muscles soften and the breath deepen. As the heart calms, the river of time slows its current. The stroke is then delivered with little effort, yet absolute precision. Because you have lived the fight, tasted the energy, and seen the details in the theater of the mind, the action is now etched into your marrow. It is no longer a lesson to be remembered, but an experience to be recalled.

Make it real to the mind, and the body will never forget. This is the stroke of knowledge: Ka ai a ka ui.
